DSLR

Yes, ladies and gentlemen.

It finally happened. The stars aligned (and I got my tax return) and I am now the proud new owner of the Nikon D3100.

And hopefully those will be the last bad pictures you see here! Too bad you can’t take pictures of your awesome camera with your awesome camera.

So last Saturday Victoria and I went to go play with our cameras in Deep Ellum. A lot of the photos turned out great! I’ll post just a few, but you can check the whole album if you are fb friends with me!

Love that one too. Great shot Victoria!

I think I’ve come home from work every day and made a beeline for my camera. I have lots more pictures from my first week with the camera, even a few I was brave enough to attempt to edit. But I’ll save them for another day. I must say, I ADORE photography.

New Header, New Day!

I've been enjoying my snow day today (!!!) by working on a new header for my blog. What do you think?

End of 2010

Well, somehow the last 2 days flew by. How did that happen?

On Thursday I drove home from SA. It took 4 hours on the way down and 5 1/2 to come back. (Boo traffic.) When traffic looked like this:

I stayed glass half full by doing this:

(notice my new scarf I got from Charming Charlie?) As you can tell… I was bored. I choose to think it was a desire for positivity, not narcissism, that lead to the mini car photo-shoot.

While I was driving I ate:

After the drive home I had meetings Thursday and Friday for church stuff, I did laundry (hurriedly) and played with some of my new toys from my shopping excursion.

My new birds!

Latte made with my bodum milk frother (love it!)

And I even found the book I was looking for that I saw on Allie’s blog last week! Yay! Now all I need is my camera!

I’m participating in Diana’s eat-in challenge in order to save money for my camera and kick off 2011 healthier, so I had my last supper (er…..lunch) at Pei Wei before my meeting Friday.

And after my meeting I came home to get ready to celebrate New Year’s (or New Years?) with friends.

It started with Family Dinner at Rachel’s, Chorizo White Bean Kale Soup and homemade bread, and lots of good conversation. I know I say it a lot, but I am so blessed by these girls.

And then we headed over to Kathryn and Victoria’s for the celebration! Victoria had her DSLR and let me play with it all night, so bring on the good photos now!

Kathryn and I both have extensive Friends trivia knowledge, and though I always beat her at Friends Scene it, we both think she knows a bit more trivia and I have faster reflexes. So we did a trivia-off. Which totally reminded us of this episode! We each won a round, so I guess the champion will have to be determined another day.

We also somehow ended up taking pictures as super models, practicing our best smize.

We had a great time and rung in the new year right.

Hoping to have another post for you soon with all my New Year’s Resolutions (and I have a lot). Keep a look out for that!

2010 was an amazing year, and I’m looking forward to a lot of changes and a lot of excitement in 2011!  Happy New Year!

The Universe is a Pretty Big Place

One of my favorite blogs on my RSS is The Boston Globe’s The Big Picture. They post world events through the eyes of photographers. For Advent (which we all know I love!) they have been doing a daily photo of images of space.

And let me tell you.

They are amazing.

And the pictures are even more amazing when you read the descriptions of what they are, where they are located, and what is happening.

I’ve always enjoyed astronomy, I took it in college, and I love doing our astronomy unit every year in fifth grade. I think part of it was the fact that my brother wanted to be an astronaut for years growing up. There’s so much perspective brought into view when you start to realized just how tiny we are. Stars, planets, galaxies, endless, going on forever. And here we are, a teeny tiny planet making up less than .5% of a teeny tiny solar system with a baby star, one of many in our galaxy, which goes on and on and on, into other galaxies. The images are beautiful and declare the glory of the Lord. I mean, how can you look at these photos and see them as an accident or random serendipity?

It’s been fun to get a new one in my Reader inbox every day and just marvel at it. So take a peek- enjoy!

Camping Kick Off

After staying up ‘til 3 in the morning watching HP7 and getting 3 hours of sleep for the last day at work before Thanksgiving break (read: the kids were crazy and I was exhausted!), what do you do next?

Go camping, of course!

I dashed home and packed up my stuff and headed out to be one with nature for the weekend.

I LOVE camping and really don’t do enough of it. I usually only end up going about once a year. I’ve had this trip planned for several months now and couldn’t wait. The timing was perfect because I have all next week off (yay!) so it doesn’t feel like I’m giving up a weekend when I have time to do laundry, go grocery shopping and do all the weekend-y stuff all week long.

The weather was also perfect. 45 at night, which makes campfires pleasant and warm sleeping bags and extra wool sock seem like the best things in the world. And 70 during the day, beautiful, relaxing, cool for hiking and warm enough to not need a fire during the day.

We hiked about 3.5 miles. It was beautiful. I've had a hard time convincing myself not to run out and buy a DSLR lately, and walking in all the fall leaves and sunshine made me wish all the more that I had the ability to capture all that beauty. I did, however have a bit of fun playing with my pudding camera app on my iPhone.

Time with friends, books, campfires, nature, bananagrams and s’mores was just what I needed to jump start my Thanksgiving holiday. Bring on the next 8 days! (Just not too fast!)
